The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh

5.0

This story takes place in 1872. Celine Rousseau is a 17 year old running from a dark past in her home of Paris. She travels to New Orleans, LA in search of a fresh start at a convent. Unknown to her, a whole new kind of darkness resides in this American city. She becomes tangled up in a murder mystery involving otherworldly creatures and a very handsome, yet devilish, young man by the name of Sébastien Saint Germain.

I have been wanting to read a Vampire book for a while so I was excited when I heard about this one. I loved every part of this book from the strong female lead to the description of the scenes and characters. Ahdieh successfully gave just the right amount of dramatic irony while still leaving the murderer a surprise until the characters discovered who it was. The twist at the end was completely unexpected and I was so frustrated by the events in the last chapter and the two sentence epilogue! I cannot wait for "The Damned" to be released in June so I can find out what happens next. Whatever happens, I ship Celine and Bastien 'til the end!
