UGH, I love Carissa Broadbent’s writing. It’s beautiful, poetic, and illustrative while always being incredibly readable. Her Six Scorched Roses was a shorter novella still packed with action, romance, and of course, a couple of twists.
Lilith, our main female character, is a scientist trying to save her human village and her sister from a terrible epidemic likely brought on by one of their White Pantheon gods. She veers off the traditional science path and seeks help from a vampire living outside of the town to see if there is anything he may do to help, even if his gods are very different from her own.
My favorite thing that Broadbent does is combine fantasy, world-building, action, and romance in such a balanced and realistic (well, as realistic as fantasy gets) way. Six Scorched Roses’ plot was so intriguing, and I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what would happen next. Lilith was an incredible character – intelligent, determined, incredibly passionate, and driven to help those around her.
This story was short, yet somehow, Broadbent was able to build characters in such a beautiful way. It is challenging to do in such a short book. But, truly, I just loved Six Scorched Roses and flew through it.
