The Dagger and the Flame by Catherine Doyle
3.0
Thoroughly enjoyed this one but felt a few things were lacking. World building first and foremost, I wanted to know more about the world and the history beyond the few crumbs we got. Some of the characters should have gotten more integration into the plot. Also, and this is a personal preference, but I don’t enjoy books in 3rd person as much when there’s 2 POVs because it never feels like their POV really. The plot felt a bit slow but then also super fast; it took them essentially 1 page to figure out a new form of magic a which felt unrealistic even for fantasy standards. No misfires, no almost successes, too easy?
The ending had a few turns, half of them I saw coming, but overall a good setup for the next book, which I will definitely read!! I loved Ransom and his POV a lot, also, there’s a dog so, I’m sold!
