A beautifully written dark fairytale of hope and healing
Deerskin’s prose is of traditional fairytale style and begins in a way that reminds me of the beginning of The Secret Garden. But that’s where the resemblance ends as the heroine faces rape and a miscarriage that the author handles as delicately as such a serious topic can be handled and without graphic description. The rest of the heroine’s journey is one of hope, healing, and the faithful friendship of her dog, Ash. It reminds me a little of Fitz and his dog in the Assassin’s Apprentice.
