Animal Farm by George Orwell
5.0
Synopsis:
Mr Jones of Manor Farm isn't aware of the rebellion which is being planned by the animals in his backyard. Unhappy with the Lord of All He Surveys attitude of humans, the prize Middle White boar Major, otherwise known as Willingdon Beauty, who is twelve years old and nearing the end of his life, decides to incite his fellow animals.
But, what happens when he dies and there is a new leader at the helm? A pig that goes by the name of Napoleon who calls his fellow animals comrades and rules with an ironclad hand in the name of freedom from humans.
Review:
The first thing that surprised me was that George Orwell is the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair. The second thing was – Animal Farm 'A Fairy Story', from what I have heard of this book till now, nowhere it seemed to me to be a fairy story. And then, it was a volley of surprises as I continued reading it. Did you know that during Orwell's lifetime only, this book was translated into an Indian language as well – Telugu, and it was only in that language that the subtitle was retained. Other interesting facts are also disclosed in 'A Note on the Text' contained in the 1989 edition of Animal Farm by Penguin Books, which is a reprint of the first edition of 1945.
Long before all the -isms, there was Animalism. Its essential principle being 'four legs good, two legs bad'. No doubt about it now that it is a fairy tale, albeit a fairy tale for adults. A world where animals are talking, that is, behaving almost like humans has got to be a fairy tale only.
Another thing I can't help mentioning is about the cats as described here. Apparently not only humans but also, other animals are susceptible to their charms. It is now proved that cats can wrap everyone around their paws by 'purring affectionately'.
A story as applicable to the present times as it was then, I felt that it would be a little better to know about the history which the author depicted in the book. And I am off to do that now!
P.S. It was a new experience to see the time period (November 1943 – February 1944) mentioned at the end, during which the author wrote the book.
