The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten
mysterious
medium-paced
4.0
Lore is a poison runner, who is blackmailed into spying on the Sun Prince. As her and Gabe spy on the Prince, and the three get a little closer than anticipated, they learn more about her powers and the strange happenings going on in neighboring villages.
I really enjoyed this book, but there was just something holding me back from absolutely loving it. The magic system took a bit for me to understand, the first 40-ish pages are pretty confusing when it comes to Mortem, but I got the gist of it eventually and could follow along fine. Still, nothing really stuck out in this book as overly interesting. I liked the idea of weaving death and life, the lore (lol) of the dead kings and where the magic in their world comes from, the mix of an original religion and politics, and the dynamic between the 3 main characters—but despite all that, I still struggled to want to come back and read.
This is a relented author, and I think the world building has really improved since “For the Wolf”, but I think these books are still missing just a little something. Or maybe I’m just waiting for more romance idk. I still wanna read the next book as soon as it’s out, so maybe i’ll adjust my opinion of this after that.
