December 2024, DNF at 88%. I just can’t do it anymore. This is a long, messy book — and, by all accounts, this should work for me — but it felt like too much build up, very little payoff. There is too much filler, an inconsistent and uncertain magic system (Is Miro a “pantser?”), and so many characters with such a long introduction to them all that it isn’t clear until over halfway through this chunkster who the main characters actually are, and even then, the secondary and tertiary characters keep elbowing their way to the front. I’m out.
