Conspiracy of Silence by Ronie Kendig

3.0

I was roped into this world via the novella. It had more supernatural elements than I preferred, since it was a military book that I thought I was going to read. Think Robert Ludlum or Colin Forbes, but modern and written with a feminine flair.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it would have been 4 stars, yet there were elements within that brought it down.

This is slated as Christian fiction and as such, I hold books in this market to a higher standard. I can handle words such as "crap" or "son of a biscuit", but when using the substitution for the f-word, then that's where it bothers me. Words like that get stuck in my brain matter as I'm reading and this is a word that I had broken the habit of saying. To me, this is something that can cause another to stumble.
Another thing that bothered me is the repetition of "I'm toxic". Yes, we get it. But it's repeated quite often. Plus, the reader is reminded of something that just happened either in the previous chapter or a few pages before. Readers don't need explanations or reminders. We just need the story to continue. That slowed my reading. Lastly, there were instances where the character, Tox Russell, seemed to step out of character.

Otherwise, for a Christian novel aimed at women this is a great book. For those of us who love military novels, action novels, etc. this is a good read and one that is enjoyable. I'm looking forward to reading the next two books to see how it all plays out.
