Those Who Wish Me Dead by Michael Koryta

3.0

This should have been 4 stars but I am deducted a whole star for the horse thing because I'm still mad about it. (No horses are harmed in this book, spoilers below)

SpoilerOk so one of the main characters is rehabbing this horse who broke its leg several months prior, and in a state of desperation, she decides to take the horse out before he is technically supposed to be walking around. No horse person would do this unless it was literally life or death, which i'm not really convinced it was. ADDITIONALLY. not only does she take the horse out, she makes this horse carry TWO people UP A MOUNTAIN in the middle of the night. A horse recovering from a broken leg. In real life, this would end in the horse breaking its leg and throwing both riders possibly off a cliff like, 90% of the time. this is a legendarily stupid thing to do and anyone that knows anything about horses would also think this is VERY stupid

For a novel that seemed accurate in all other aspects (wildfire knowledge, mountaineering, survival skills etc it was really jarring to have this pop out of nowhere and kinda ruined what was otherwise a pretty solid story. but that's just me being an annoying horse girl and if you are not also an annoying horse girl you might not notice this.
