This is a GOTHIC romance. This means that all the characters are supposed to be hateful and unlikeable. The setting is meant to be dark and the main characters are meant to be questionable and highly dysfunctional. 

I will always be in awe of Emily Bronte's ability to create such an intense story and characters that have sparked such passion for centuries. I will always be immensely sad that she never got to write anything else.
