This was the first book that I've read written by Cathy Gohlke and I must say that I was quite impressed. In this story, we find Hannah Sterling, who has never really known her mother, Lieselotte Sommer, despite being raised by her, and we follow Hannah on her quest to discover who her mother was and how World War II forever changed her.

The story alternates from Hannah's story, set in 1973, to her mother's story, set during World War II in Germany. It is a beautiful tale of a daughter realizing how very little she actually knew about her mother. What Hannah finds amazes her and helps her see her mother in a new light--makes her realize that being told she is like Lieselotte is actually a great thing.

At the end of the book, Hannah deals with forgiving some people in her family and it is obvious at that point that this is Christian fiction. I usually tend to shy away from that type of genre due to the numerous predictable Christian books I've read, but this book is different. The plot and the storytelling are captivating and experiencing the lives of Hannah and Lieselotte is something you won't want to miss.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and Tyndale House Publishers. Thank you!
