- Strong character development? No

The book lacks severely compared to The Silence of the Girls. Bresies becomes a voice for other women such as Cassandra and Amina but Barker fails to tie these stories together convincingly. Due to this Bresies lacks any development and the overarching plot weakens. Barker's writing remains beautiful but the storytelling lacks. Overall, 3.75 stars.
