Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton
2.0
This book had Potenzial and I do think the TWs were there for a reason but huhhhhhh nah this was just weird. Like I enjoy reading cringy or „dark romance“ esque books but it wasn’t dark most of the sex scenes are just SA and even though the author no the mc is trying to convince us that it’s okay it’s kinda really not. If the dude had just been a stalker and more like the grandmas stalker, yk consensual, it would have been a way more enjoyable read if you can look past other trigger warnings.
I wish the grandma plotline were eithe more interesting or take up less pages because it really wasn’t that deep and I wish they focused on one thing, either romance or the crime subplot trying to do both just fizzled out towards the end and made it kinda boring. It was still ok , not horrible writing or uninteresting but it’s so problematic in a way the author doesn’t acknowledge . I hate to bring up Lolita but I think it’s a good example, the author knows that the dude is disgusting and everyone who reads the book knows that he’s disgusting , that’s the point of the book. But in this the ml never redeems himself for the horrible things he does and it just gets ignored and suddenly the mc gets over her fear and hatred for him after sleeping together again. When he was depressed and showed compassion for the girl that got killed i was hopeful that maybe he would change and that they could be loving but I guess the point is that he’s an obsessive stalker who is only ever h0rny and never shows emotions aside from anger again.
I just feel like this book was a huge missed opportunity and I feel scared for the girlies who think that he is the ideal man, like he into whatever you’re into but please have higher standards
