One By One They Disappear by Mike Lucas

dark mysterious medium-paced

2.0

The blurb of this book was so vague that I decided to just trust the process and find out what the story was, and why the blurb told us nothing (which, I have no idea). This is the story of a young Jewish girl hiding from the Nazis during WW2, and the village with a mysterious history she finds herself in.

I was pretty bored for a lot of this book, the starting pages that told of the loss of Hazel's parents and her journey to the village had me invested in the story, but after that not much happens until the end of the book. I felt a strange emotional disconnect from Hazel for a lot of this story.

I didn't like the ending. The story of the Nazis and what they did shouldn't be warped or changed to become almost a pantomine villain moment, and the darker moments had little impact. I was hoping for stronger Brothers Grimm vibes, but this felt more like a sci-fi.
