This was an absolutely amazing book. It was a quiet story of disaster and the end of the world paired with a young girls coming of age. It was beautiful, emotional and poignant. The writing was amazing. There were some very moving moments and a lot of quotes that I loved. There was a subtleness to the story - it was quite slow moving but I actually enjoyed that. I knew that it wasn’t an action packed science fiction thriller but I think some people did expect that which is why they didn’t enjoy it. The apocalypse was just in the background; it was all about Julia and her life as an 11 year old. I loved her character and following her story. She was really well written and had a lot of personality. The important things to her weren’t the days getting longer, it was her friends and family. Her and Seth made me cry. It was such a sweet representation of young love. There were a lot of little things that went wrong for Julia and her family - I think I cared more about those things than the actual world ending. I loved this quote: “Maybe everything that had happened to me and my family had nothing at all to do with the slowing. It's possible, I guess. But I doubt it. I doubt it very much.” Obviously, the days getting longer was such an interesting plot and I really liked that whole concept. There was still science and for me there was enough of that side of the story. It was a pretty scary scenario to imagine and I was worried for the characters. I don’t think the world would cope if that actually happened. I could probably talk all day about how much I adored this book. It was stunning.
