DoOon Mode by Piers Anthony
5.0
I've spent a long time with this series, and while it was always clear that a satisfying resolution was possible I was so worried that Anthony wouldn't pull it off. Colene is a unique literary character and I wanted her to have a happy ending without her pathos being cheaply dismissed. DoOon Mode is relentlessly straightforward and logical about problem-solving, but I never felt like it was artificial. the incredibly complicated world-building was like a rewarding puzzle to be solved, and the strength of Anthony's writing is that he doesn't treat emotional problem-solving as less real or interesting than the very dense logic puzzles he comes up with. he truly cares for Colene, and it shows. the Mode series starts and ends with Colene's interiority, her grief, and her strength. this one's for the girls.
