I have such a hard time describing this book, not that I didn't like it, I truly did. It was probably one of the best depictions of magical realism that I have seen in a very long time. Blended incredibly well with the world around them without even trying (though it's obvious the author put in work) This was a take on grief that I would-IN MY OPINION-comfort me in my grief. It is such an interesting and unique way to look at what it is like to lose someone, especially a child who hadn't even really lived a life. How it not only affects the parents but their families and friends. I enjoyed Lena and M's perspectives the most out of the four. I liked that Magos perspective was first as Santiago and M's mother. She gave birth to both, the second being more unconventional. But Lena next was a choice I was a huge fan of. I found her view of everyone to be more honest that Magos. Not because Magos was in her grief, Magos just seemed to think as the people in her life as more of a compliment and benefit to herself rather than actual people with actual feelings. Lena seemed to love everyone deeply and see them. I have no idea whether Lena is a good friend or just delusional but I could not have been convinced to bring Monstrilio back to m place when he was first born with his little arm-tail, no thank you! But I found her constantly throwing herself into her friends lives cause she didn't want to live hers. I also wanted her to just leave and live her life as she was never going to be with Magos and she was never going to be the focus of anyone's life, Magos, Monstrilio or Joseph. Joseph's part, I felt more annoyed with honestly. I understand that he was trying to move on and live a life but it felt more like he was just hurting people in his life. Peter is a SAINT and I don't think I could've been okay with how Joe was treating him. Peter was an outsider in everyone's dynamic and felt it! Dead Santiago, Monstrilio, M, was Magos, Lena and Joseph grief to bare but when you're planning to marry someone, you have to share in that. I get that he was afraid of how Peter would've reacted but he really pushed the "have to trust me" a little too far. He better understood M when he was Monstrilio, at least it felt like he more understood that he was a monster, but M, I felt that he just wanted so bad for him to be "normal" that he ignored who he was. M was by far my favorite perspective. I enjoyed the touch of there being no quotation marks to the point where sometimes I had to go back and be like, who started this conversation? But it made sense, as he was just someone who was trying to fit into the human world and be "normal" but he never was. Them letting him go at the end, letting their grief go, just perfection. HIGHLY recommend! 5/5
