White Fang by Jack London

4.0

White Fang is Warrior Cats for libertarians. That is my truth and I will not hide.

The best part of this book is the style. Jack London is a master of rhythm and action. All the fat is burned away— what we're left with is raw, muscular prose. It's simple but effective. Because it's through this prose that London communicates his most powerful idea: animals can be intelligent without being human.

Animal protagonists novels typically place a human mind in an animal circumstances. Making them little more than four pawed teenagers romping through the forest. And honestly, this is probably for the best. Literary animal are effective at communicating difficult emotions without having the burden of humanity. Plus, books are more fun when life isn't nasty, brutish, and short.

But there's a time to look at the world through the eyes of a wolf— To remember that your subjective understand of reality is just that: subjective. And when that time comes, White Fang is here for you.
