Burn It Down: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood by Maureen Ryan

5.0

This is a fantastic read, and perfectly timed. Not only does it provide context for what’s been happening these last couple of decades in Hollywood, but it also helps us understand and empathize with all those on strike. (To be clear, though, the book is not about the strike or even directly about what the WGA and SAG members are asking for. This was written well before the strikes were authorized.)

I’m appreciative of the nuanced discussion of diversity in Hollywood and why it matters, the history lessons throughout, and the clear and direct calls to action. Is it an exhaustive list of what can be done? No. It might not even be the best solutions. But I appreciate somebody laying out their recommendations and continuing to move the conversation forward.
