All Fours by Miranda July
4.0
I've been having a hard time writing a review of this book. It's so complex and so brilliant and so aggravating, all at the same time. As a perimenopausal woman who is close to the same age as the author (and we also went to UCSC at the same time and have mutual friends, but I did not know her personally), I am so grateful to read a truly personal account of how wild this time is - in our bodies, hearts, minds, and souls. There were aspects that grated my nerves as her other books do, but overall I can set those tiny grievances aside, because the overall attempt to describe this time in life is admirable and Miranda July does it with authenticity, humor and art. I highly recommend you listen to the author narrate the book, because I do think you miss the tone and sense of humor if you just read it.
