System Collapse by Martha Wells
3.0
Having loved all the other Murderbot books so much, I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't feel the same way about System Collapse. I know that's in large part due to my mental head space at the time of reading but I felt overwhelmed by the sci-fi jargon and I also didn't feel as connected to the story or characters. I think it would've helped if I had done a recap or re-read of the previous book in the series because I forgot that this would pick up essentially right where that one left off. I still enjoyed Murderbot's dry humour and I loved how snarky ART was. There's some trauma that Murderbot has to unpack in this book as well, which slowed down the pace of the story considerably, as Murderbot isn't 100% their fast-acting SecUnit self. It was interesting to see how the trauma manifested for Murderbot but also to see it process the PTSD it was experiencing. The action does pick up a lot towards the 70% mark and by then I was fully engaged although it took a while for me to get into it. That said, it's still very much an enjoyable Murderbot adventure. The confusion, the jargon and my distracted mindset made this a less enjoyable experience but maybe one day I will re-read this (say, before the next Murderbot book gets released).
