Intermezzo is a poignant family drama centering around two brothers coping with the loss of their father. Through these two flawed, deeply human characters and the people in their orbit, Rooney thoughtfully explores grief, love, and human connection. Rooney’s portrayals of challenging family dynamics and messy, unconventional romantic relationships are extraordinary. Intermezzo is charming, emotional, and feels more mature than her previous novels. I really enjoyed it and will be eagerly awaiting whatever comes next.
