House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J. Maas
5.0
Spoilers ahead!!!
Soooo... Finished this one.
I have a plethora of problems with it, however for me it's an easy five-star rating.
Some of the things I didn't like:
1) it was absolutely pointless to make Lidia a mother. Bonus bad points for her acting absolutely stupid "for the boys". Like can we have a badass female character that doesn't lose a brain when it's about children? In addition to that she was basically pleading Pollux on her knees just so he leaves them alone (she was completely pathetic in that scene) only to have her be a badass "FU" in the next moment. It doesn't click.
2) Hunt was my absolutely favorite boy in CC 1 and 2 and here he's a whiny b*tch 99% of the book.
3) In general, most males were whiny. Ithan, with his quest for making the right thing and blowing shit up in the process. Tharion too, though he was less obnoxious. Like all that "what have I done, I'm so traumatized, so hurt" was a taaad too much in the whole book.
4) Sarah, please stop it with the sex scenes in the middle of or right before a battle. Seriously, wtf.
Things I feel neutral about:
1) The pace. The action of the whole book felt as if in the span of months as well as several days (originally the book spans about a week). It was weird in places but I was so with it.
2) From about 80% onward the book felt like a remix of KoA. It wasn't a bad thing, but more like a nod to Sarah's previous works which I liked. Like "I see what you did there" moment.
What I liked:
1) Bryce! I love that girl. She had some "almost Aelin" moments but I loved how she's shown as smart and capable woman. Loooooved her!
2) Nesta. First time I'm simply in awe with that girl! Such a badass.
3) The links between all the books. Lidia's lineage, Prythian with Theia and her daughters
4) Ruhn, Flynn and Dec. Those guys were awesome.
5) The Avallen storyline. The mists and the missing islands. So interesting!
6) Resurrection of the Fallen. Loooved it. But I have a weak spot for angels, so...
