Where They Wait by Scott Carson
mysterious
medium-paced
2.75
I’m a little disappointed by this book. It just wasn’t what I was expecting or wanting - it had a really interesting premise and set up but the execution let it down for me. At times it was creepy but it no where near enough. The writing was good and there was a very mysterious, ominous atmosphere to the story. The pacing was a little strange. I feel like nothing really happened for most of the book and that didn’t leave enough time for when things actually did happen. I did like the characters - I liked Nick and I enjoyed following a journalist. He was actually really interesting, especially with his past. I liked his relationships with his mother and Renee. All of the memory and dream stuff was really intriguing and I kind of wished that the focus was more on that than the strange song. It could have gone a lot deeper into the manipulation of memory and it could have been really scary. The actual plot was… strange. I’m not entirely sure what actually happened. It was very mysterious and tense, especially in the third part. I just don’t think I liked the direction it went in. The way it all ended felt anticlimactic; it was all wrapped up so easily and quickly. I was left with a lot of unanswered questions.
