The Unquiet Dead by Ausma Zehanat Khan

challenging emotional mysterious sad slow-paced
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes

2.5

  • Strong warnings for explicit depiction of war crimes, sexual violence (including children), torture, ethnic & religious genocide.
  • Started off shaky but the compelling plot delving into the Bosnian genocide gains momentum in the middle & leads to a strong ending. Has my big pet peeve: POV hopping within a single scene.
  • I wish there is less focus on the foibles of the MCs' personal and romantic lives. But I would be interested in reading more from this series.
