White Feminism: From the Suffragettes to Influencers and Who They Leave Behind by Koa Beck

I am so glad I read this book. White Feminism is an informative, assumption-challenging read that's both fully accessible for someone just beginning their journey towards a more intersectional, collective-based feminism, and revitalizing for someone who, like me, has been learning in this area for years. I should say, specifically for white people, as I can't speak to what this book could provide for a reader of color. Koa Beck's writing is wonderfully clear while diving into complex subjects, and the way she wove in history, pop culture, and other feminist writing illustrated her points perfectly. One thing I struggle with in how antiracist reading lists have become more popular since the protests around George Floyd's murder is that I think a lot of white people want to jump right into "discovering" other cultures or getting access to the deep, personal pain of Black people and other people of color in order to "improve ourselves" while never actually taking time to address our own shit. White Feminism is a perfect first step for that, in my opinion. Beck really dredges up a lot of ideas that usually go unchallenged in white-majority spaces, especially in the white-collar workplace. Loved this, and I imagine I will return to it often.
