Us Against You by Fredrik Backman
5.0
Rereading this was scary - I was worried it wouldn't live up to the version in my head that's been there since I first read it years ago. I've considered this book one of my favorites of all time, and that certainly has not changed.
Backman's writing is so magical to me. I know he philosophizes a lot, I know many people don't like that type of writing but... I do. I adore his manner of storytelling. It's emotional, intense, exhilarating and overwhelming, but most of all it's relatable.
Yes, these books are of course about hockey but they really are about so much more than that. It's about humanity at it's core, and what we all do for love - love of a game, love of each other, love of ourselves, love of our communities. This book hits like a sucker punch, I almost forgot how emotionally intense it is, the entire time I felt like my heart was in knots and I knew what was going to happen. I love this book. So so much.

Possibly my favorite series of all time. Beartown and Us Against You are some of the best books I’ve ever read, and Backman has become one of my favorite authors. This series is mesmerizing and overwhelming. At times it was hard to read - painful and sad in ways that hit too close to home. The topics it covers are tough and complex, but Backman uses these conflicts to show us what it means to be human - how morality isn’t black and white, how we make mistakes and learn to atone for them, and how a community can either raise each other up, or tear each other down.
”The complicated thing about good and bad people alike is that most of us can be both at the same time.”
Beartown, and all of its people, will never leave my heart and soul. People say this cliche all the time, but this series has truly changed me. I won’t be the same after this, but it’s in the best way possible.
Benji, Ramona, Amat, Maya, Leo, Zackell, Bobo, Kira, Fatima, Ann-Katrin, Teemu, Sune, Jeannette.... you all will forever be with me. Thank you for being some of the best fictional characters I’ve ever read. You all have made me a better person, for that I am sure.
”I hope you’re the kind of person who gets a happy ending.”
