The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams

4.0

Lots of interesting ideas. In some ways I actually liked it more than the first instalment, but the former was more iconic and unique, so I kind of did it a favour in my last review to be honest. I’m starting to notice that these are really just fixed up novels, or novels made out of short stories. That eases the whiplash feeling of the plot to me I think…

Something about the gang doesn’t work for me, though. It’s less “Arthur, Ford, Triliam, Zephod and Marvin” and more “Arthur and Ford” and “Trilliam and Zephod”…and Marvin I guess. The point is, whenever these pairs interacted with one another it was almost awkward. I mean, are they friends? Foes? Acquaintances? There is no chemistry there because they hardly acknowledge each other.

I feel like there’s entire books of development between each instalment, books I haven’t read! Which makes me wonder, was the radio show more “dense” and are these just summaries? There’s something lost in translation here, I’m sure of it. Otherwise I can’t explain why everyone acts so friendly to one another when they’ve talked for what, a week max?

Anyway, I found it funny, but I don’t entirely connect with the world or its characters. But I definitely vibe with its humour, I found some moments genuinely hilarious from time to time.
