This book, and this series will always be a favorite for me.
I went into this just hoping that it wouldn't be the same song and dance as most YA fantasy series. I wanted to see a coupling that actually stayed together and fought for each other verse multiple lovers.
I fell in love with Aldrick and Vhalla's relationship and I was invested in them every step of the way.
Was it alittle predictable ? Sometimes, but not nearly in the ways that mattered.
The characters, both main and supporting, show so much growth. The characters learned and changed with the events and surroundings. They didn't repeat the same things nor did they emotional regress. I felt like it just made the bonds of the group so much more believable and relatable. I felt for these characters. I feared for them. I hoped for their happiness. For a book to invoke such attachment is one of my favorite parts of reading.

This might be labeled as YA and a debut series, but I felt like the whole story and world was a constant weaving of threads. Threads of the vortex, you could say. This series has very real and dark content to it, both physical and emotional. The depth of the overall series was perfect. It has just enough suspense, romance, magic, and thrill to keep you reading for hours. The only thing I felt was YA about it was the "fade to black" for sex scenes and the shorter than 500 page count per book. More pages doesn't always equal depth and a better story though. Each individual book in this series proves that point.

I cannot wait to read the Vortex Chronicles to learn more about the world and what happens with these characters I have so fell in love with. I want to know the mysterious magic that is "Vi".
Elisa Kova won a long term fan with this one.
10/10 would recommend and read again.

ps: TWINS? TWINS? MY HEART NEEDED THIS ENDING MORE THAN ANYTHING AFTER WHAT HAPPENED IN THE CROSSROADS.
