Perfect depiction of trans depression. The kind of dulled depression that creeps into adult life and might be no longer actively suicidal or distressing all of the time, but it's like a dull knife, and if you get used to it, cause it's better than alternatives, then maybe you won't notice. Kinda a road story, but not really.
I first read this around when it came out and have re-read it several times since. It's one of my favorites, not because it's uplifting, but because it portrays a really aching human emotion in a way that I feel as well.
