Em and the Big Hoom by Jerry Pinto

5.0

This book made me laugh, cry, and left a million and one feelings in my heart . . . Goodness, my heart is heavy.

Em and the Big Hoom revolves around the romance of Imelda (Em) and her husband, The Big Hoom (Augustine), narrated by their son. Em is the centre of everyone's world because she needs a little extra care due to her mental illness.

We not only go on a detailed journey of Em and The Big Hoom's romance but also the family is dealing with Em's illness. Em comes off as a person who isn't shy to speak her mind or shy away from the birds and bees talk. This book is full of dark humour—which will make you think twice whether you should actually laugh or not—and raw moments that will leave a lump in your throat.

I cannot stress enough on how brilliantly written this book is; the literature nerd in me was on a 24x7 high. It was a treat reading this phenomenal piece of fiction whose major chunks were taken from Pinto's own life and was 25 years in the making.
I'm in awe—of the book and the author—as after quite a while a book with so much heart landed in my lap.
HIGHLY recommended!
