A Stranger in the House by Shari Lapena

3.0

I am giving this book 3 stars because I enjoyed it. Not because it was well written, or the characters were fleshed out and believable, but I enjoyed it despite the book's massive flaws. It made me smile and in some parts cringe at how bad the plot was and yet I wanted to find out what happened in the end.

This book is like the very essence of the average, over confident, middle-aged white man. You know the kind I mean; the sort who thinks he's brilliant when he is mediocre at best. The sort who calls himself a nice guy but secretly thinks he's better (and smarter) than his wife. The guy who thinks of himself as loyal but cheats at the very first sign that his marriage isn't as inconvenience free as he would like. This man keeps a massive secret from his wife but then immediately says he can't trust her because she also went into the marriage with a secret, and he doesn't see or appreciate the irony of his attitude. He's just a dick, and the idea that two relatively intelligent women would be fighting over him is sad.

The only character I even vaguely like is the detective and the attitude of the other characters to him is condescending and at times downright aggressive. He's talked down to and patronised at almost every turn and yet he has a positive and open attitude and seems quite a happy likeable chap. I guessed the entirety of the ending by the middle of the book. This is a book for people who don't want to have to think for themselves.
