I don't know if I have the words to describe how much I loved this book. As a king Arthur retelling, this definitely goes up there with Legendborn for me. I literally had to sit in silence for an hour after the book finished just to process it.
I loved everything about this book. The characters, their relationships to one another, the plot line changing from what you think it's going to be to something completely different, the unpredictable surprises, and the cliffhanger. It was all so good.
Tamsin's fear of abandonment throughout the story was really palpable and her struggle to let people in because of it was understandable. From what she knew, she had been abandoned by her parents as well as her adoptive father, so I could definitely understand her not wanting to get close to anyone new. So when she finally did, I was rooting for her, only for her to be abandoned again by arguably two of the most important people in her life, one of them being her adoptive brother that she's been with and taken care of her entire life. But I was so happy to see that she didn't let that affect the renew relationships she had developed with her three friends and I loved seeing them all came together and seeing how Tamsin even wanted to bring them all back to the mortal world with her. It was just great character development.
I also thought the plot was so intriguing and completely different from what I thought it would be. At first Tamsin and Cabell are just trying to get enough money to stay alive, but one of Tamsin's jobs leads them to the completely new and separate world of Avalon and the motivations shift to trying to save this place and their newfound friends from a curse that has been cast upon it, all with the underlying thread of trying to break Cabell's own personal curse. Even though these might seem like completely different plots, the story didn't feel disjointed but flowed smoothly from one plot point to the next, while also wrapping back to the original idea at the end.
So yeah, plenty of great things to say about this book and I can't wait for the second one to come out!
