Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation by Kristin Kobes Du Mez
5.0
Not so much a review, but some notes I took as i read:
I heard about this book from the podcast Straight White American Jesus and it does not disappoint.
A couple of good points covered in the book so far:
-- Link between purity culture and anti-communism (what??) Toxic masculinity and the cold war.
-- How segregation academies solidified evangelical support for the GOP.
-- And a quote. I've wondered for years why something seemed off to me when a religious person makes a smokin hot wife post. I mean it's a compliment? Sort of? But also look at me, this woman is with me therefore her looks make a statement about my character that I need you to know. It suggests strikes me as an odd thing to pronounce. But it's basically hyper masculinity- the false, forced, binary, toxic, women as possessions kind of thing. And from a movie, a parody...
"It is hard to tell whether Will Ferrell or Mark Driscoll deserves more credit for the smokin hot wife phenomenon that swept through evangelicalism in the early 2010s."
Next chapter is Pilgrim's Progress in Camo
