A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
4.0
The first time I read this was in May, 2022, so I was curious how I would feel returning to it a year and a half later after.
Was it as good as I remembered it? Not really, but I did read two thirds of this book in one day, so it still had that captivating effect - and this time I knew what was going to happen!
I remember that when I first read this, the love story between Feyre and Tamlin felt like the most amazing thing I had ever read. Now, it reads a little like Twilight. Home girl really just hated him, then realized he was powerful, saw him shirtless, had sex with him, then decided she was in love. Like, girl, what?!
I like how fast paced this book is. It keeps you turning the page for more and more and more. Unfortunately, that fast paced style doesn’t leave a lot of room for character development and growth that feels organic that can give that big payoff at the end. However, I remember getting that from the others in the series.
This is also an interesting contrast from the Throne of Glass series, which were quite slow but had an amazing and powerful impact when we saw the characters grow.
Spoiler alert: it feels like SJM took the easy route with Tamlin conveniently having a stone heart - especially because this was never mentioned again…?
Overall, it was an engaging re-read, with style quirks I didn’t love but ultimately feel fine with. I would probably even re-read again.
