The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo

dark slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix

  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes

3.5

I'm a bit disappointed... I loved Ninth House and Hellbent, and this novel fell flat in comparison for me. The characters and their relationships felt a bit superficial. Luzia's journey to learn magic was just kind of skipped over even though the main character  learning to control their magic, acquire knowledge, etc, has historically been a great aspect of Bardugo's stories. There was very little action, intrigue, or mystery in this novel. I was left thinking, "Was that it?"
