The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang
5.0
Type of read: Commuter Read.
What made me pick it up: Highly recommended by a close friend.
Overall rating: Grotestuely poetic and hauntingly real, 'The Poppy War' is one of the first books in an extremely long time what made me feel every word. When I first opened the audio book, I'm not going to lie, seeing that it was 19 hours long was a bit of a shock, but every single minute was so very worth it. I cringed, cried, laughed, and truly felt like I was right next to Rin as she found her strength, explored her history, and grasped to understand why the world works in the way it does. 'The Poppy War' is definitely not a book for the feint of heart or squimish; however, the story that is told is incredible. I'm very much looking forward to continuing the series.
Reader's Note: 'The Poppy War' includes themes and storylines revolving around self-harm, mental, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, drug use, and war. There are graphic depictions of rape, death, and torture.
Audio Book Notes: I listened to this at 1.25 versus my normal audio book level of 1.75 or 2.00 speed. Honestly, I take that as a way that both the author and the narrator worked together to form a well-cadenced story. Additionally, Emily Woo Zeller did a fantastic job with the narration.
