The author’s note mentions this book was written in a few hours and boy does it show!
In all seriousness, this is a book that demonstrates the failings of shoving books into YA boxes when they don’t belong there - this could have worked really well as a dual-timeline story of Tierney surviving as a girl and dealing with the aftereffects as an adult (think Yellowjackets meets The Handmaid’s Tale), but that apparently doesn’t sell books. Instead we get a limp Hunger Games knockoff with weird pacing and a love triangle that feels as though it was written at gunpoint.

Doesn’t hold up on the reread (only for book club) and I hope to god the editor who signed off on this sloppy ass first draft has been fired by now
