I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

5.0

This is a highly engrossing read, read by the author. I enjoyed listening to the emotional, raw, real, and confusing things Jennette underwent. There is a huge trigger warning to note for abuse and eating disorders.

Jennette is the only daughter of a cancer-ridden mom who emotionally and sexually abuses McCurdy throughout her life. Pushing her into acting to fulfill her need versus Jennette actually wanting it.

Jennette is strapped to her mom at every point unable to gain independence until the cancer has torn through the mom's body so much she passes away. Empty, binging/purging, and drinking away the feels Jennette's memoir offers insight into being a child star, a dysfunctional family, and learning to find peace with oneself. It is funny, sad, and eye-opening that all those in the star's light aren't living stars as we imagine.
