Wild Women and the Blues by Denny S. Bryce

5.0

The narrator was very talented, performing an array of colorful, entertaining voices. I was primed to like this for the historical 1920s Chicago setting and the young female protagonist, Honore, who is a dancer. She witnesses a murder, and a guy from her past comes back into her life. This was all great. I was riveted.
It didn't need the 2nd storyline, present day from the pov of a historian researching Honore. Mostly we could have done without him. His backstory was that his sister died in a car crash while he was driving and he is crushed with guilt. This plot point was unnecessary and I guess it was added to make him less boring?
Turns out he does have a tie to Honore and there is another reveal, but really the novel didn't need the pandering "twists". It was an excellent historical fiction about a girl living her life, enough said. I was also disappointed by the rushed ending. I wanted more of Honore.
