The Deep by Alma Katsu

Interesting and engaging mystery and historic ghost story. I enjoyed the writing, the flashbacks, and the dual timeline. I really enjoyed the concept of combining the familiar story of The Titanic, the less familiar story of The Britannic with a fictional ghost story. The blend of real history with the supernatural is a really accessible way to enjoy either genre. The historical elements also felt very realistic and nothing stood out as grossly false, so I assume that the author did heavily research these ships and the events. My only reason this is 4star instead of more is the underutilization of the sinking. I feel overall the ships were amazing characters and created the atmosphere for the author but I wanted more raw and realness from the passengers at either sinking. As the ghost story itself did not add the horror or pending terror, it was the pending sinking we all knew was going to happen. I think the author could have really leaned in on either the characters 'supernaturally feeling the build-up of tension, or built their terror of the ghost, while we were all concentrating on the sinking. But otherwise a really great book.
