Was this book good? Yes. Was it not as good as I expected? Also Yes. Did I still enjoy it? Yes again.
No that I got ghat put there, let's talk about this a bit more. I initially watched the movie a year or two ago, I can't really remember, and I found out that it was based on a book a little later. As a geek it was salready clear to me that I just had to read it. And if I am gonna be honest, I did enjoy reading this book. There were so many great video game references and Pop culture references to the 80s in general. I got most of the latter because one of my best friends loves that time. It was great to see my other passion, besides reading of course, be at the centre of a book. Uou could say that this book really brings my two hobbies together. The overall story was really interesting, too, and I especially liked that it was a bit different to that of the movie, actually.
However, I have to admit that this book is also very lacking in some departments. The first topic I wanna youth on is Gamergate. For those of you who don't know what ghat means: It was an online feud in 2015 about who was considered go be a geek and it was an all out war. And sadly, this book shows a lot about the bad parts of this conflict very clearly. Additionally, I heard from multiple sources now that the representation in this book is at some points quite lacking and I have to agree. Even I noticed that the representation was very stereotyped and mostly not too good.
So, to come to a final conclusion, J liked this book despite the major flaws it holds, and if you are ready you are ready to be aware of them whole reading I would recommend this, since it is really enjoyable and funny. And if you want any more information on Gamergate or the problems with this book just ask in the comments or google it.
