Dog Sense: How the New Science of Dog Behavior Can Make You a Better Friend to Your Pet by Michael Page, John Bradshaw

5.0

My god this was fun. (Are the reviewers on Amazon reading the same book I did??) It’s definitely going on the to-purchase list, because I think I’d benefit from a reread and chasing down the citations.

Bradshaw heads the Anthrozoology Institute at University of Bristol, which I almost went to until Edinburgh made me an offer instead. He’s one of the foremost researchers on how we live with dogs, and what’s good for them, and I have a profound respect for his work.

The book is dense. I agree with the reviewers on that. But it is a really comprehensive look at the science of dog behavior and (some) genetics, and highlights some studies I haven’t read yet (and a number that I have! go me!). But oh my god, just for making sure your head is pointed in the right direction on dog welfare, this is invaluable.

It is not a training book. Do not go into it thinking it’s a training book. Bradshaw is perfectly clear that it’s not a training book. Sorry??
