At birth, all Monchurans are mentally paired with their Kindred–a lifelong best friend. An unlikely pair “adore” one another but will never meet (due to their vast class difference) until a tragedy strikes, giving the perfect setup for a (literal) star-crossed lovers mystery.
At the first sign of danger, Felix’s first thought was Joy’s safety, and I swooned. I liked the romantic angst but could still tell that care was put into the worldbuilding–even if there were plot holes and soap opera-ish drama. I usually dislike YA books that feel like they have to teach you life lessons, but this worked for the fish out of water storyline.
