a great new urban fantasy book

pros:
- gripping, well-paced and well-written.
- stakes were set up at the start and maintained/built
- the characters felt individual, well-developed and real - they got hungry, mad at each other, tired, etc.
- plot tied together really well
- liked the inclusion of Elaine and Tommy into Aysel and Z's two-person team
- it focused more on friendship than romance
- the side characters like Azra, Mrs Dunnington and the teachers were rly well done
- highly original and diverse, and I liked that it was set in the 90s

cons:
- only thing that felt off was Z's lack of grief over the death of their family, it didn't feel fully addressed
- ending felt a little inconclusive and a little confusing (but the story dealt with RL issues and there's not an easy fix to that, the ending was hopeful at least.)
- wasn't 100% invested in the characters emotionally for some reason
(- also reading about Z getting misgendered so much was realistic but painful
- there's also some uncomfy eye gore)
