I remember only vaguely reading one of the Moomin picture books when I was young and that it was quite enchanting. So years ago, when I saw this at the bookstore, I offered to buy it for my daughter thinking I could read it too. It took me that long to finally get to it. I am so glad I did!
It's definitely enchanting, but also mysterious, philosophical, a fable with many small morals and even apocalyptic!
There was only one teeny tiny inconsistency. There was a conversation about the story of Moses and how his mother hid him from the soldiers in a basket and set him adrift on the river. Being otherwise completely fantastical with references to fictional deities later on, this seemed odd and unnecessary. Sort of like seeing one of the Buddhist monks in a movie wearing a crucifix.
Otherwise, it's such a perfect little literary package of delight, excitement and joy. I loved every bit of this story and can't wait to collect the rest of the series, which is beautifully made and illustrated as well.
