One thing really really bothered me: Henry's 'healing journey'. The build up in the first book - 'The Family Upstairs' - and in this one was more interesting than the small twist at the end; I could see it coming, but was hoping I was wrong. It felt like I had gotten invested in a book in which one of its three story points was either based on a grave misunderstanding, or on a sudden unexplained change of mind in Henry. I was disappointed).
But overall the book was good, what stood out to me was that it could be read without necessarily having to read the prequel first. Although I would; it's much, much better.
