Mother Courage and Her Children by Bertolt Brecht
5.0
I'm not well versed in Brecht's epic theatre, but I feel like I know enough to understand this was a "failure" if we go by the goals Brecht set himself to achieve. His idea remains a bit confusing to me so I might need to do some research anyhow.
Still, Mother Courage is a fascinating play. It's both grand and small and despite Brecht's own attempt at making Mother Courage a virtuless harpy that feeds off of the tragedies of others and learns nothing from the war, I could still sense a character arc of sorts. I saw her becoming more deranged and animalistic as time passed by, mirrored in the laudable humanity of her daughter, who died for the sake of others.
As a read it was obviously amazing but I really want to see it performed one day. I saw some clips from an adaptation in YouTube earlier and WOW did they understand the assignment...
