I have so many scattered thoughts ranging from the prose, characterization, racism, misogyny, and plot. I can't seem to pull together in this moment, but I'll say this for now: the way that slavery and race and sex were spoken about in this book debased what could have been a fascinating story about tenacity and perseverance despite trying circumstances and a rapidly shifting society to the point that it was unfathomable for me to feel anything but contempt for it.
