Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

This book. This story. These characters. I am fairly certain this was the first queer love story I ever read. I remember the first time I read this story, I loved it but only gave it four stars because I was still in a place where I was fighting what I'd been taught by my religion to believe about homosexuality and hasn't yet started to actually listen to those moments throughout my life when I'd wondered "could I be?" I am so glad that this book started me on a journey of reading more queer books because I felt something when I read it, I connected to something. In their acknowledgements, author Casey McQuiston wrote "What I hoped to do, and what I hope to have done with this book by the time you've finished it, my dear reader, is to be a spark of hope or joy you needed." Casey, you succeeded! Also, on a funnier note, a moment during the reread that made me laugh and think "TRUTH" was "Straight people, he thinks, probably don't spend this much time convincing themselves they're straight." I can't recall for sure, but I'm almost certain that line probably made me pause at the very least the first time I read it. Oh also, there's going to be a movie this summer! Perfect time for a reread and glad I got to it before then because now I'm even more hyped than I was.
